The bane of the Faithless

Finally I finished painting my Witch Hunters, and I can barely wait to try them out!

I’m planning on doing anarrative battle report with them once I get the chance.

They have been a fun project to paint, and what’s left is their Hired Swords.

Enjoy the pictures!

The crazed and the faithful

I recently found some more time to paint, so I chose to continue on some Witch Hunter Henchmen through batch painting them.

I’m really happy with how they turned out, but I was concerned when I started painting that they would be too “bright”, but the grittier they became I started to like them more and more. I also like how I managed to make the armour pieces from the Cawdor kit that they have here and there (the lined pieces similar to the Genestealer Cult armour pieces) to look like paper.

Once I start painting the Wardogs all my henchmen are complete, and I can start painting my heroes one by one, which I’m really looking forward to!

WAAAGH!!! Grizlag

Time for a short break from painting Mordheim and building Skirmish warbands, and time to talk about something NOT in a skirmish setting, but rather rank-and-file, that's right, I'm talking about a return to Warhammer Fantasy Battles.

This return to the old world started for me when I built and painted an Orc Warboss, which I was going to use for AoS at first but playing in the Old World/The World that Was, but I stumbled upon a conversation that some friends had about Warhammer Fantasy during a 30K event I was attending to, and joined in the discussion, and showed them some WIP's on this model, this led to me along with these guys to start a Warhammer Fantasy campaign, being rather fluent about editions between 6th and 8th, using the edition which will most benefit our view on the battle.

This also grew into us 5starting a Podcast, "The Old World Lives", where we talk about everything of the Old World, be it games, books or miniatures, anything goes! You can find us on itunes, facebook and podbean. Come and check us out!
https://theoldworldlives.podbean.com/

Anyhow, this thrill of the old world is one I havent had for a long time, and I rebased the model before starting to paint it, and mounted him upon a square base to lead my Greenskins in glorious battles! I got reminded of my love for Fantasy and reawakened the boy within me who started to play this game, untainted by the kind of metaplayer or competetive armybuilder that I turned into in my early 20s when I frequently went to tournaments.

This particular greenskin is my 4th rendition of my Orc Warboss, Grizlag Ironfist, leading a nomad tribe of orcs and goblins, taking over smaller tribes or striking alliances while they pillage and raid their way from the Badlands up through Border Princes, where our campaign will be set.

My inspiration for the model comes from all sorts of artwork on Orc Warbosses through 6th edition Warhammer, mainly one in the 6th edition rulebook where an Empire General is striking his hammer against a huge Orc Warboss amidst the chaotic battle. I have always wanted a large orc warboss, so none of the existing models cut it for this model, so I looked for the largest one I could find, which was the Ironjawz Megaboss from AoS, but he was way too armoured to be a "common orc", and I wanted his armour to feel more like decoration than actual protection.

I chose not to repose him, as I see the model yelling out orders and threats rather than having a fighting pose.

At the beginning of the campaign, I will field Night Goblins only though, and Grizlag will eventually absorb the tribe, wether the Night Goblin Warboss does this willingly or not, we'll see as the campaign goes on in the future... I will also start to cover some of my army progress here eventually, stay tuned!

Repent thy sins...

I recently started building some Witch Hunters for Mordheim as the new Cawdor box came out (lovely kit! Probably one of my favourites of all time!).

I wanted a slightly grim feeling to my warband, with great contrast between my Witch Hunter heroes and my fanatical henchmen followers, so the Cawdor kit was perfect for this project.

I went for pretty much classic Witch Hunter looks, coats and hats, but I was also inspired by some art pieces from the Mordheim rulebook, which helped me build my dog handler Witch Hunter and my Warrior Priest.

The warband will mainly be part of a Mordheim campaign I’m currently writing, “The dance of Geheimnisnacht”, where they will act as an NPC warband for the faction of the church (stay tuned for the Cult NPC warband!).

I have been playing a lot of the Mordheim PC Game too, which inspired me to build an Executioner, probably one of the most fun pieces I built for the warband, he will use the rules of a Flagellant for gaming purposes.

The Executioner was also the first model I painted, so I went for a pretty limited palette and went for saturated colours for a grimdark feeling.

I will also share the rest of the warband, in the usual black and white.

The full Warband

Elizabeth Steinhardt - Witch Hunter

Richter Hassel - Witch Hunter

Trevor Rutter -Witch Hunter

Victor Garaz - Warrior Priest

The Twin-tailed Comet - Flagellant

Krüger “one-eye” and Adolph - Wardogs

The Executioner - Flagellant

Stay tuned for more updates with the painting progress!

Barrow Kings - a Mordheim Warband

I recently finished writing a new experimental Mordheim warband, and with some help through the community I’m almost finished with the rules, all I need to do is play test them through a campaign, hoping that they aren’t underpowered or overpowered, I want them to be fun to play with and against.

The main idea with the warband is that tombs and barrows that have been desecrated, had their protective charms stolen or broken or the like, have their inhabitants resting uneasy, and are easily affected by dark magic.

During events such as Geheimnisnacht, when the green moon Morrsleib, made of pure wyrdstone, shines bright, the dark magic in such places can seep into the bones of the dead, and fill them with a parody of life, pulling the souls of the dead back to their bodies, walking the earth again.

There are other undead warbands in Mordheim, the “Undead” warband in the core rulebook led by a Vampire and his minions, another is the “Restless Dead” from the unofficial supplement “Bordertown Burning”, but both these warbands have living creatures in them, and the dead are animated with necromantic spells, I wanted something like a “natural phenomenon” if you could call it that, to have woken the dead.

Anyhow, once I’ve finished the layout in my rules PDF I will upload it and share it, meanwhile it is available on the Mordheim Facebook group.

Blast from the past: Mordheim Battle Report, Broken Contract

Scenario: Surprise Attack.
Players: Jimmy Henriksson and Emil Carlsson
Setting: Empire in Flames
The Story:

Giovanni had traded with Jarl Bereolf many times, the chief of a very southern Norse village. Both had swindled the other countless times in the past 15 years, but the trading yet continued, for they were men of business deep down, and it was all within the written contract.

But today the very first strike was blown, Jarl Bereolf attacked Giovanni and his merry Marienburgers at the crossroads between Sigmar Haven and Cutthroat's Den after having recruited some muscle for another go to the cursed city of Mordheim.

The information that Bereolf had gained was that a rich merchant was heading through this crossroad, and set a trap. He had never in his life had any intentions to ever fight Giovanni, but it was too late now, the trap was sprung, and the attack initiated!

Giovanni eventually caught Bereolf's eyes glimpsing at him from the forest. Thus was the contract between MTG (Marienburg Trading Guild) and the Jarnbotir Clan ripped to shreds, they would never trade again. And with that, Giovanni and his men fled down the roads back to their camp...
